Score 94/100 · Drink 2001-2026, Pierre Rovani, Dec 2001

The 1997 Gewurztraminer "Hugel" Selection de Grains Nobles "R" (this letter can only be seen on the lot number which appears in small print on the front label) was picked on the 30th of October at 19.6 natural potential alcohol and retains 103 grams of residual sugar. It has an explosive rose, white flower, and lychee nut-scented nose as well as a rich and oily-textured personality. This full-bodied, opulent wine is surprisingly accessible for such a young SGN. It is crammed with spices, jammy apricots, peaches, and minerals whose flavors last throughout its stunningly long finish. Drink it over the next 20-25 years. Carnal aromas of dried apricot, truffle, honey and earth. Very sweet and viscous, but the pungent honey and spiced meat flavors are brightened by lively acidity. Superb snappy fruit is remarkably accessible already. Finishes with palate-staining honey and spice flavors. Perfectly balances 13.3% alcohol, 142 g/l r.s. and 5.5 g/l acidity. Outstanding, and likely to be long-lived.
