Tasted from magnum, the 1999 Clos Vougeot Vieilles Vignes was disappointing, offering up an entirely tertiary nose and palate dominated by aromas and flavors of decaying leaf matter. While some of Laurent's wines from this era are defying their critics and developing gracefully, if this magnum was representative, the 1999 Clos Vougeot doesn't number among them.

Ruby-red. Floral aromas of black cherry, licorice, herbs and subtle oak; distinctly Musigny-like. Thick and sweet, but very penetrating and rather backward. Superb slow-building finish is currently dominated by the wine oak. Very elegantly styled and subtle.
