The 2000 Barbaresco Santo Stefano is in the zone. Ripe, silky tannins give the wine its soft, inviting personality. Layered, racy and sensual in the glass, the 2000 possesses lovely nuance, with plenty of bright red berry and cinnamon character. The 2000 is one of the more open-knit, exotically ripe wines in this vertical. Then again, that is very much the style of the year. The largely resolved tannins and over-all feel suggest the 2000 is peaking and perhaps starting to fade.

The 2000 Barbaresco Santo Stefano shows gorgeous site and vintage character in its sweet, perfumed fruit, flowers and crushed flowers. Santo Stefano is a warm, south-facing site, and much of that is captured in the wine's open, inviting personality. I don't expect this to be a super-long lived Santo Stefano, but it has held up quite well and far better thn the 1997, also from a hot year.

I don’t expect this to be a super-long lived Santo Stefano, but it has held up quite well and far better thn the 1997, also from a hot year. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2020. Bruno Giacosa has long been a fan of the 2000 vintage. I found his 2000s quite forward when I tasted them at the winery in November 2010, but far fresher when I opened the same bottles from my cellar in the US.
The 2000 Barbaresco Santo Stefano was in a beautiful place, the tannins just starting to soften, seemingly releasing the bouquet to find a compelling, exhilarating upper register.
About the producer
Bruno Giacosa – now run by daughter Bruna – is a cult Nebbiolo producer, that has consistently made some of the best single-vineyard Barbaresco and Barolo from the 1960s onwards. The“red-label” Riservas are some of the finest and most collectable wines in Italy.
