Upfront and ready to go, with a decidedly old school profile of saddle leather, lilac, crushed flowers, raw meat, and garrigue, the 2001 Mas Martinet Viticultors Priorat Clos Martinet is a beauty on the palate and offers up loads of fruit and texture, low acidity, and enough structure to keep it drinking well for a number of years to come. Drinking beautifully so don’t be afraid to open bottles.

Blackish crimson. Dense. Some Cabernet? (Yes – more than third!) Very nice drink – already! Round, easy, approachable, not that much tannin underneath (a little). Good short term fun. (JR)

The flagship offering, the inky/purple-colored 2001 Clos Martinet, is a blend of 38% Grenache, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Carignan, 12% Syrah, and the rest Merlot. With great density and fabulously explosive aromatics (acacia flowers, crushed blackberries, blueberry liqueur, and wet stones), this full-bodied, compellingly rich, multilayered, awesome wine is a great example of what makes the Priorat appellation so special. Still young and unevolved, it needs 2-4 more years of cellaring, and should last for 15+ years. Importer: a Christopher Cannan Selection, various American importers including Michael Skurnik, Syosset, NY; tel. (516) 677-9300 and Diamond Wine Merchants, Oakland, CA; tel. (510) 567-9897
