Deep ruby with brickstone rim. Dark earth, almost a little farmyardy and with a hint of mushroom. Muted palate with brooding fruit but practically no sign of development. Succulent finish manages to come through the huge, powdery tannic structure. (WS)

Serralunga d'Alba. Fontanafredda's rehabilitation continues apace. Heady, exciting nose with lots of correct fruit and a tannic impression only at the back of the palate. A very good effort if not quite a wine to set the heart racing. (JR)

The opaque plum-colored 1997 Barolo La Rosa reveals the influence of toasty new oak in its fabulously pure, concentrated nose, which represents the essence of melted licorice, blackberries, and assorted black fruits. As the wine sits in the glass, scents of toast, smoke, leather, tar, and fennel emerge. Full-bodied, massively concentrated, powerful, and dense, it requires 3-5 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2022. Importer: Parliament Wine Co., Atlantic City, NJ; tel. (609) 348-1100
