The 2004 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe, tasted from magnum, is superb. Floral, leather and spice overtones confer vibrancy. This is just bursting at the seams with intensity in all directions. Brisk acids drive through the mid-palate and the long, sustained finish. What a gorgeous Barolo this is. The 2004 has always been superb; from magnum it is especially compelling.

A huge, brooding Barolo, the 2004 Riserva Bricco Boschis San Giuseppe needs another 5-10 years in bottle before it starts drinking well, but I imagine it will remain a brute for quite some time beyond that. Today, the 2004 is virile, massively tannic and imposing. Game, smoke, savory herbs, scorched earth and graphite add to a sense of gravitas as this dark, ample Barolo shows off its personality. The searing tannin and backward expression are reminiscent of a Serralunga Barolo. Patience will be essential here.

Ripe and finely perfumed nose that is still a little closed and with just a touch of mulch. Ripe sweet fruit palate with energetic acidity but still quite tannic. Elegant palate weight and muscular grainy tannins. Youthful vigour and with lots of potential. (WS)

Very, very young. Very concentrated on the palate, almost completely covering the fine tannins. But they will come out eventually. Iron notes. (WS)
