Score 93/100 · Drink 2024-2042, Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux, Jun 2024

Creamy fruit on the opening, as with the 2003, accompanied by well structured tannins that take a little time to open up. This has plenty of depth and smoked spice, with chalky tannins, dark chocolate, cocoa powder, grilled caramel, dark fruits with luscious cherries heading towards crème de cassis, extraction pushed just a little too hard. This is fleshy, impressive. Harvest September 18 to October 5, unfined, light filtration. 100% new oak for ageing. 82ha in production. 58hl/h yield. Michel-Bernard Couasnon consultant.

The 2009 Sociando Mallet has a tightly wound bouquet. Mainly red fruit, raspberry and wild strawberry are mixed with cedar and mint, becomes fresh and lively after three or four minutes. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly soft entry, missing some depth (especially for a 2009). A stilted finish that just lacks the flow one would expect. This falls below my expectations compared to previous bottles. This is Sociando-Mallet being its usual unpredictable self.. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting.

Tasted blind. Mid crimson. Fresh, notably youthful nose. Attractively luscious fruit on the palate although there are some rather rasping tannins and marked acidity. I wouldn’t take this for a 2009 blind. Pretty drying and demanding on the end at the moment. (JR)
