Saturated, bright red-ruby color. Superripe aromas of berry liqueur, leather, licorice and smoke. Rich and supple, with good volume and distinctly sweet fruit flavors. Nicely round and seamless wine with a slight rusticity and a hint of licorice on the end.

The 2005 Savigny-les-Beaune Les Peuillets smells gamey, smoky and sweetly floral, featuring ripe cherry fruit, marrow and game on the palate. The village wine exhibits more clarity and polish in the finish today, but perhaps bottling will actually do this good. A Becky Wassserman Selection (various importers), Le Serbet, Beaune; fax 011-33-3-80-24-29-70.

Dark red. Confectionery cherry and leather with some roasted suggestions of redcurrant and iron on the nose. Tight and leathery in the mouth, a bit tough for this cuvee at this stage. The redcurrant flavor carries through. With its serious tannins, this is not a sweet style. (The basic Savigny villages was tight and bound-up, and finished with a hard edge and a bit of dryness.)
