The 2000 Clos de l’Oratoire, matured in 90% new oak for 18 months, has an attractive nose of leather, earth, cedar and fern aromas, nicely detailed and exuding Pessac typicité . It might lack a little intensity but this is not a serious flaw. The palate is medium-bodied with simple brambly red fruit laced with orange peel; there’s just a touch of brettanomyces here. It attenuates a little toward the finish and maybe fades too quickly, but otherwise it has retained freshness, if not the vigor it must have had in its youth.

Ripe, well-made, and slightly over-rated in my report written seven years ago, this 2000 exhibits lots of black currants, cherries, smoked herbs, and spice in a full-bodied, round, generous, fully mature style. Delicious at present, it should drink well for another 5-7 years.

Very, very deep colour, almost black. Oddly light nose with a hint of sawdust and pickle which is a bit worrying. Very thick and extracted and drying towards the finish. Lack of real fruity core. Just colour and mass really. (JR)
