Score 94/100 · Drink 2021-2026, Eric Guido, Vinous, Mar 2021

The 2001 Capanna Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is generous, autumnal in character and deeply alluring. The bouquet shows sour cherry, blending with notes of quince, cinnamon, clove and sweet red florals. It then evolves into a more earthy and savory expression, adding animal musk and undergrowth to the mix. It is velvety, tinged with minerality that lends an almost-meaty character to this dark, soft and enveloping wine. This has everything you could hope for in a mature Brunello, with a bump of brisk acids, tart red fruits, wild blueberry, dried orange peel, sweet inner florals and hints of bitters. Slow mounting tannins come forward over time, but the 2001 is already so lovely. There is still a decade or more left of maturity in store. Wow. Tasted from my own collection held in professional storage.

Capanna's 2001 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva needs a lot of air to show at its finest. Initially very reticent, it gradually opens to reveal high-toned aromatics, macerated cherries, medicinal herbs, menthol and spices. Somewhat lean at the outset, it gained weight and volume with air.

Mid ruby. Wood smoke and autumn mulch. A sweet start and rather charming. Not too heavy – a lightness of touch. Definitely true to Montalcino Riserva. Needs time but all the elements are there. Very correct. (JR)
