Score 94/100 · Drink 2023-2038, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, May 2023

The 2003 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a fine example of this torrid, dry year. Kirsch, cedar, sweet spice and leather fill out the layers nicely. Powerful and ripe, as one might expect for the vintage, the 2003 nevertheless remains quite poised. It’s another wine that is drinking well now but shows no signs at all of fading.

The 2003 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is dense, powerful and intense. At the same time, there is basically no trace of the unrelentingly hot weather that gave growers so many headaches. Hints of dried cherry, plum, mint, dried rose petal and savory herbs add nuance to the deep, resonant finish. This is one of the best bottles of the 2003 I have tasted yet.

Once again, the 2003 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva surprises. Powerful, rich and beautifully layered, the 2003 offers terrific depth, but there is absolutely no sign of the scorching heat that characterized the growing season. Dark cherry, plum and licorice notes meld into the expressive, inviting finish. The 2003 is a rewarding vintage for current drinking.

One of the most pleasant surprises of the evening, Soldera’s 2003 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva races across the palate with remarkable depth and intensity. The warmth of the year comes through in the wine’s pure volume, yet all the Soldera signatures are in place. This rich, totally inviting Brunello is a fabulous choice for drinking now over the next 15-20 years, perhaps longer.
