Score 95/100 · Drink 2013-2017, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Feb 2013

The 2007 Cecubo is drop-dead gorgeous. An extraordinary, expressive bouquet leads to smoke, tar, game and incense nuances as the wine emerges from the glass. There is a slightly wild quality in the Cecubo that is highly appealing. Deceptively medium in body, the 2007 turns increasingly elegant over time, capturing a striking interplay of elegance and power. The wine's inner perfume and silkiness are rare for wines of the south, especially in this price range. This is a stunning wine and an absolute steal from Villa Matilde. Cecubo is an unusual blend of 45% Abbuoto, 35% Primitivo and 20% Piedirosso.

The house style favors textural richness and depth. At times, varietal expression can take a bit of a back seat, but the wines more than compensate for that with their extraordinary personalitites. In particular, I found a number of the reds to be simply dazzling this year. Many of these wines are also great values. Importer: Empson, USA, Alexandria, VA; tel. (703) 684-0900
