The easiest to find of the three 1990 Tokays will be the Tokay Clos Jebsal VT, of which 350 cases were produced. This is a stunningly balanced, spectacular, rich, honeyed wine with moderate sweetness. Its super-high acidity makes the wine taste dry. Its presence and finish make for an unforgettable wine tasting experience. It should drink well for 15-25 years. Readers must keep in mind that for the top Alsatian producers the situation is much like that in Burgundy - only tiny quantities of wine available. Generally, between 50 and 150 cases of each wine is the entire allocation for the American market. Given the sheer power and nectar-like qualities of the 1990 late-harvest wines of Alsace, readers will be amazed by their riveting aromatic and flavor intensity. They are massive yet extraordinarily well-balanced. A question I frequently am asked is how does one serve a Vendange Tardive wine? They are best served prior to a meal as an aperitif, or at the end of a meal - alone!
