Score 93/100 · Drink 2012-2030, Jay S Miller, Wine Advocate, Feb 2008

The 2004 Vinas Viejas was sourced from four D.O.s and 50-60 plots in which the Tempranillo vines average over 50 years of age. The wine was aged for 24 months in a mix of new and used French and American oak. Opaque purple-colored, it offers an alluring perfume of toast, saddle leather, mineral, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. Full-bodied and opulent on the palate, the wine has layers of spicy fruit, enough structure to evolve for another 4-6 years, superb depth and concentration, and a pure, lengthy finish. It is a testament to what skilled blending can achieve. Drink this classy effort from 2012 to 2030. Importer: Carlos Montalvo, Fine Wine Imports, San Juan, PR; tel. (787) 782-8008

Big, bold, sweet and animal – all Tempranillo. A bit much – certainly an alcoholic assault on the palate. Chewy underneath, only for the bold! (JR)
