Score 87/100 · Drink 2026-2030, Angus Hughson, Vinous, May 2026

The 1988 Shiraz Mount Edelstone has reached an advanced stage with roasted fruit, camphor and caramel aromas. It comes across as heavyset, flat and faded. This bottle is potentially not a great example.

A lot of evolution at the time but still some firm blackish crimson at the core. Slight hint of decay on the nose. Dry tannins, almost syrupy. Very much of a previous era cf the wines from 1990 onwards. Dusty. Losing fruit. (JR)
