Still a lively dense crimson. Some sweetness still on the nose. Rich and full and really most impressive! This is definitely one of the good 1964s. Full and rich and meaty with a neat finish and not fading at all fast even if it is at the peak of its powers now. Fresh vital finish. Pretty impressive. Will the red Bordeaux being made today last as long as 30 years, I wonder? £368 Caves de Pyrène (JR)

Score 87/100 · Drink 1988, Robert Parker, Jan 1998

One of only a handful of vintage successes in the Medoc, Gruaud-Larose continues to taste uncommonly fruity, deep, and round. There is no evidence of dilution from the heavy rains that ruined many others. This is a succulently textured, generous, perfumed wine with medium to full body. The 1964 Gruaud-Larose has been fully mature for over a decade without drying out. A sleeper! Anticipated maturity: Now. Last tasted, 12/88.
