Score 93/100 · Pierre Rovani, Feb 1998

This grand cru was fermented and aged in a blend of old and new barrels. 1996 was a fabulous vintage for the Chablis Les Clos appellation - its power and intensity is given additional focus by the vintage's high acidity levels. Droin's reveals a rich, spice cake and butter-laced nose as well as a massively powerful, magnificently-balanced, full-bodied, and layered core of smoky minerals, lemon zests, pears, flint and touches of sweet oak. The flavors seemingly go on forever in this superb wine's stunning finish. Importer: Eric Solomon's European Cellars, New York, NY; tel (212) 924-4949.

Reticent but aromatic nose of pineapple, oak spice and oyster shell. Rich, thick and large-scaled; with softer acidity, this is already showing its volume. The pineapple character repeats in the mouth. Perhaps best today on the firm, very long finish. But this appears to be a very good rather than outstanding Clos for the vintage.
