A powerful, tannic wine, the 2006 Gattinara exudes class, depth and also a good bit of nuance as well. Sweet tobacco, game, licorice, leather, mint, star anise and exotic spices meld into a core of pliant red stone fruits. The aromatics are just starting to open up, but there is more than enough depth and underlying tannin to allow the 2006 to drink well for another decade or more. This is a fabulous bottle.

Leesy nose with a hint of iron and brooding cherry. Still amazingly tight on the nose for an eight-year-old wine, convincingly showing how well Spanna can age. Vibrant acidity and lots of sweet cherry fruit on the palate. Transparent and succulent and really pure. (WS)
