Tasting notes
Rich, layered and nicely balanced, the 2007 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Le Lucere caresses the palate with layers of plums, smoke, tobacco, licorice and spices. This solid, well-crafted wine should continue to drink well for a handful of years. Stylistically, the 2007 Riserva occupies a stylistic middle ground between the two 2008 bottlings.

Anticipated maturity: 2013-2017. San Filippo has been one of the more puzzling estates in Montalcino over the last few years. The straight Brunello is often outstanding, as it is again in 2008, but the higher-end wines are rarely more complex or interesting. Concentrated ruby with orange tinges. Very ripe and concentrated, just not very complex or compelling and lacks a little tension. Very low acidity. (WS)
