Brovia’s Serralunga Barolo, the 2008 Barolo Ca’ Mia, saturates every corner of the palate. Dark fruit, smoke, melted road tar, graphite and incense wrap around the palate in this dramatic large-scaled Barolo. Even more promising than it was right after bottling, the 2008 impresses for its spherical personality and towering class. Serralunga is, of course, best known for producing powerful wines, but Brovia’s Ca’Mia is just as remarkable for its superb finesse and elegance. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2040. I can’t say enough good things about the Brovia family and what they have accomplished over the years, but especially over the last decade or so, which has seen them jump into the upper echelon of Barolo producers. The 2008s had just been bottled when I tasted them in November 2011. Now that the wines have been in bottle a little longer, it is clear they are fulfilling all of their early promise. Serralunga d’Alba. Deep, youthful ruby. Very young, backward and fine nose of red fruit and leather. Muscular, ripe structure. Elegant, the proverbial fist in the silk glove. Complex and aromatic finish. Lay down. (WS)

The 2008 Barolo Ca' Mia is beguiling and exotic. Sweet hard candy, flowers, mint and licorice meld into a core of racy red fruit. Firm tannins frame a long, insistent finish laced with rose petals, sweet spices and licorice. The Ca' Mia is highly expressive and beautifully balanced. It boasts striking inner perfume and fabulous poise. In most vintages Ca' Mia is mostly about power, but in 2008 it represents the height of elegance.
