Score 93/100 · Drink 2019-2029, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Dec 2019

The 2003 La Ricolma was impressive when it was first released, and it still is, but the context of other vintages in this vertical are also quite telling. Still dark and imposing, with tons of fruit, the 2003 has aged well for the torrid vintage. Even so, big, chunky tannins remain. The dark, chocolaty profile recalls the 2011.

The 2003 Ricolma (100% Merlot) is packed with heady notes of super-ripe blackberries, blueberries, minerals, menthol, smoke and licorice. Made in a more opulent, concentrated style than the 2004, it shows great length and a beautiful, pure finish. The suppleness of the fruit works to balance the wine's tannic structure, and in 2003 I have a slight preference for the Ricolma over the Percarlo although that is a very fine distinction at this level.
