Currants, spiced cherries, savory tobacco, and herbs define the 2010 Château De La Rivière, a medium to full-bodied, round and supple effort that's drinking perfectly today. It’s an impressive showing that underscores both the quality and age-worthiness of top Fronsac. Based on 85% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Malbec, it was raised 12 months in barrels (one-third new, one-third once-used, one-third twice-used). Drink 2025-2035.

This magnificent fortified chateau, which serves as the location for many movie productions, also produces a straightforward, fruity, elegant wine that offers up good sweet and sour cherry fruit, loamy soil notes and underbrush. The 2010 La Riviere can be drunk now and over the next 7-8 years.
Tasted blind 4 Apr: Lively silky fruit with Fronsac freshness. Maybe not the most concentrated but well made. Dry finish. Tasted open 3 Apr: Deep crimson. Thick and sweet and like Fronsac essence really – very different from Les Sources! A bigger difference than between most grands vins and second wines. (Score: 15.5 14-20) (JR)
