This excellent winery's 100% old vine Tempranillo cuvee is an elegant, dark ruby-colored effort displaying a Pinot Noir-like nose of sweet and sour cherries, minerals, earth, and herbs. Remarkably, for a wine in this price range, it is filled with finesse as well as elegance. Drink it over the next 1-3 years. Importer: Jorge Ordonez, Fine Estates From Spain, Dedham, MA; tel. The 2001 Borsao Tres Picos, a 5,000-case offering, is Agricola de Borja's top cuvee (packaged in a heavy bottle). It is produced from 100% old vine, mountain-grown Garnacha (Grenache), from yields of less than two tons of fruit per acre. This is a muscular, high acid, medium to full-bodied offering with impressive extract and richness. Give it another 2-4 months to fully open, and drink it over the following 5-6 years. The wine possesses intense raspberry and cherry fruit. It is a remarkable value for $10! One of the world's greatest value-priced wineries, Agricola de Borja's offerings are made in stainless steel and bottled early to preserve their vivid fruit. The low-yielding, concentrated 2001 vintage has produced wines with more muscle, depth, and acidity than usual. Importer: Jorge Ordonez, Fine Estates From Spain, Dedham, MA; tel. (781) 461-5767

(100% old-vines garnacha cropped at barely two tons an acre, according to importer Ordoñez) Good saturated ruby-red. Liqueur-like black fruits, pepper and iron on the nose. A fruit bomb in the mouth, with roasted berry flavors brightened by fresh acidity. Fat and rich. Finishes with serious but sweet tannins that coat the mouth. Another extraordinary red wine value.
