La Morra. Slight coffee aromas over leathery fruit and spice. Rich and juicy on the palate. Very good depth in the middle and long, rounded though still pretty firm finish. (JH)

The estate's 2004 Barolo Vigneto Rocche bursts from the glass with a richly-textured expression of ripe red cherries, menthol and tar. There is superb balance in all the wine's elements; the French oak is used masterfully, and the wine's structural components meld seamlessly with the fruit and aromatics. The wine shows outstanding persistence, not to mention uncommon grace on the finish. This rich, concentrated Barolo needs a few years to settle down, but it is undoubtedly a stunning effort.

Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024. La Morra is a village that is dominated by its two towering figures, Elio Altare and Roberto Voerzio, both of whom have had a profound impact on other producers. Tucked away off the beaten track from the center of town is Oberto. Despite keeping a much lower profile than many of his colleagues Fabio Oberto makes wines that can hold their own with the best producers, not just in La Morra, but in Piedmont. His range is consistently outstanding from top to bottom. Readers may also want to take a look at the reviews of his Dolcettos published in Issue 178.
