The outstanding 2000 Hermitage Cuvee Emilie (10,000 bottles produced) is one of the vintage’s top Hermitages. A blend of fruit grown in the Rocoules (20%) and l’Hermite (80%) vineyards, it is a dense ruby/purple-colored effort displaying notes of licorice, fennel, sweet blackberry fruit, vanilla, and roasted coffee. Supple, fleshy, medium to full-bodied, and low in acidity, it is ideal for drinking over the next 10-15 years. (I tasted the assemblage for the first bottling) Bright full ruby-red. Highly aromatic nose of musky dark berries, game, bitter chocolate, gunflint, minerals and tar. Supple and ripe but also sharply delineated, with bright flavors of black fruits, gunflint and dark chocolate. Sweeter and denser than the Crozes. Finishes with lovely sweetness, thoroughly ripe tannins, and late suggestions of torrefaction. Very stylish wine, showing well today.
