The hedonistic richness of the Bin 389 noughties continues with the 2006. Roasted chestnuts, praline, chocolate. Throat-warming heat (the first time I’ve really felt heat on these Bin 389s). Christmas-cake spices. But the fruit is flushed with pink-peppercorn freshness and orange-peel fragrance. Dark-chocolate finish. Lovely, touch-me vintage-brick texture. Perhaps less finesse, more recklessly voluptuous. Who cares. (TC)

A bit cedary and mossy, the 2006 Cabernet / Shiraz Bin 389 is going through a chunky, sullen phase. Dark and brooding, I think it needs another couple of years to come around. Right now, it's full-bodied and muscular but not overly expressive, showing just hints of cassis and plum, with sturdy tannins on the finish.

More luscious than the 1996! But with lots of future. Fuller than 1996. (JR)

(a 52/48 blend) Deep violet with a bright rim. Cherry-vanilla, blackberry and cola on the nose, with complicating notes of mint, vanilla and dried flowers. Sweet dark berry flavors pick up a tangy edge with air, along with vanilla and candied floral qualities. Finishes on a sweet dark berry note, with dusty tannins adding grip and refreshing bitterness.
