(bottled entirely in magnums): Good medium red. Superripe aromas of plum, mocha and marzipan. Voluptuous on the palate, but with plenty of acidity to give shape to the deep, roasted flavors of tobacco, mocha and marzipan. The tannins build on the back end, ultimately shutting down the wine. Classic Barolo for the cellar. This wine is made from eight rows of vines in the heart of Bussia directly below Aldo Conterno's Soprana. But Clerico decided to leave "Bussia" off the label out of respect for Conterno.

Only bottled in magnums, the 2009 Barolo Briccotto is superb on all levels. This wine will not appeal to everyone, especially those with a penchant for traditional Barolo. Nonetheless, it is a monumental effort that seeks to challenge the outer limits of Nebbiolo’s depth and opulence. It tries to provoke not just a smile, but an all-out belly laugh, from Italy’s most pensive and introspective grape. Mocha, tar, black cherry, leather, toasted hazelnut and bitter chocolate are all part of the tease. The mouthfeel is exceedingly smooth and seductive. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025. The 2009 Barolo Briccotto Bussia is gentle, sweet and very pretty. There is lovely nuance and site specificity in this expressive Barolo. The Bussia is arguably the most texturally finessed of the wines in this range. With time in the glass deeply spiced, balsamic notes typical of Bussia add further layers of depth. (Magnum)
