The 2005 Barolo Ciabot Manzoni is certainly pleasing, although the new oak has never really integrated and remains quite prominent. At the same time, though, there is no question the wine has held up well. The classic Ciabot Manzoni notes - dark fruit, menthol, licorice and wild flowers - are nicely delineated. The overall impression is of a wine that is frozen in time. I suspect the 2005 will remain at its present, undeveloped state for a number of years, and then one day will suddenly be over the hill. For that reason, I would prefer to drink it sooner rather than later.

Good bright, deep red. The nose displays a liqueur-like chocolatey ripeness, with notes of cherries macerated in alcohol, graphite and nuts. Sweet, fat, broad and very ripe, in a distinctly warm, almost porty way. I find less energy and definition here than the Turne is displaying today. Finishes with big, broad, dusty tannins and lingering sweetness. In a rather chunky style, notable more for its richness than its detail.

Dark cherries, tar, spices, chocolate and French oak are some of the nuances that emerge from this rich, full-bodied wine. Ciabot Manzoni is Grasso's possesses superb density and concentration, even if the oak is quite overt. Grasso gave the Ciabot Manzoni 100% new oak, an approach that producers in La Morra and elsewhere in Piedmont have largely moved away from.
