80% Sangiovese, 10% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. You can smell the Bordelais element – would be easy to put this in the Médoc. Good, dense, intense, layered, but missing the Tuscan flair. (RH)

The 2007 Chianti Classico Castello di Brolio offers up rich, textured dark fruit in a succulent style that is very appealing. French oak gives the Castello di Brolio notable volume and body, in addition to an attractive smokiness that works quite nicely in this vintage. The Castello di Brolio can be enjoyed today for its forward fruit or cellared for another decade or so.

This set of new releases from Ricasoli is topped off with a superb version of the flagship Castello di Brolio. Readers should note that two wines in this article were samples from 500ml bottles prepared specifically for professional tastings. Importer: Dreyfus Ashby & Co., New York, NY; tel. (212) 818-0770

Sangiovese with (unspecified) portions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in the blend. Oenologists Carlo Ferriniand Marco Cerqua. Very deep dark crimson. At first herbal, but opens up with aeration. This definitely needs decanting. Lovely dense fruit palate with sweet sour impression and crunchy tannins. Fruit seems a touch muted on the finish. well made, and should be very popular.(WS)
