Intense scents of something like violets and tealeaves (not unlike vintage port smells). There is spice, oak and an awful lot of winemaking in here. Any slight lack of concentration has been artfully disguised with a great array of flavours. The most alcoholic vintage to date, at 14.5 per cent. (JR)

The 2000 Montes Alpha M is a warm-vintage blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot from Apalta. The nose reveals evolved black fruit and mild balsamic tones, along with hints of camphor. The tannins remain present and grippy through the long finish. This represents a pivotal vintage marking the winery’s transition toward a more concentrated style.
