Tasting notes
The 2001 Shiraz Lloyd Reserve’s dense ruby/purple color is followed by a sweet nose of earth, black fruits, pepper, and pungent spices. Soft and savory, with spicy oak, underbrush, and herb characteristics, it is a fruit-forward, generous, attractive Shiraz to drink over the next 7-8 years. Very healthy deep crimson with a glow. Reticent nose. There’s obviously lots there but it will take some coaxing out of the glass. Some dryness and lovely opulence. I like the way this wine finishes dry. Very well made and beautifully balanced. Lively and dancing with no excess of acid, tannin or alcohol. Muscular. Ben Glaetzer subsequently suggests it’s just starting to close down for a year or so. (JR)
