Score 93/100 · Drink 2016-2029, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Aug 2014

Marcarini’s 1999 Barolo La Serra has put on considerable weight in bottle over the last few years. A big, full-bodied wine, the La Serra flows across the palate with serious depth, power and richness. The tannins remain firm and intense. With time in the glass, the characteristic floral notes typical of La Serra begin to emerge, but this remains a brawny, intense Barolo still in need of cellaring. Hints of tobacco and autumn leaves grace the finish.

The 1999 Barolo La Serra is notably better, darker in color, sweeter and more floral on the nose than the Brunate, with attractive light chocolate notes, round, smooth, and polished in flavor, with good force and length on the development and finish. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2018. Importer: Empson, USA, Alexandria, VA; tel. (703) 684-0900

Good deep red. Musky, gamey aromas of roasted red fruits, dried flowers, licorice and woodsmoke. Rich, sweet and lush; showing more texture today than the Brunate but also a firm underlying spine. Serious, building tannins really spread out to coat the palate.
