Old vintages of Branaire-Ducru can pull something sensational out of the bag…the 1955 is one of those occasions. The tightly wound nose unfurls vibrant red fruit, mint and cedar with aeration, verging on Pauillac-like in style with wonderful delineation and focus. The palate has a conspicuously sweet and ripe entry, perfectly poised with pliant tannins. This has a sense of precision that you would equate with a Second or even First Growth. A stately and stupendous showing. Tasted blind at the "five" dinner at Domaine de Chevalier.
