Tasting notes
The new winemaking team of Gioia Cresti and Carlo Ferrini did not ferment the 1999 Brunello di Montalcino Prime Donne, but they arrived in time to finish the aging and select the various lots to be bottled, and the results are quite positive. A fresh garnet with ruby highlights, the wine features an attractive spiciness to accompany its red currant fruit and notes of leather and herbs, a round and balanced medium-weight structure, and polished tannins on the close. Nothing earth-shaking, but a new start and an encouraging one. Drink: 2005-2014. Importer: Supreme Wines, Pleasantville, NY; tel. (914) 769-5858

Special bottling made by four women. No barriques. Botte seem to have imbued more weight than in the regular wine above. Solid. Leafily appetising. (JR)
