It is fascinating to taste the 2006 Le Serre Nuove (magnum), the second wine of Ornellaia, in this setting, as it shows quite well, especially next to some of the Ornellaias from smaller vintages. Le Serre Nuove is naturally made to be more accessible than Ornellaia and contains a higher percentage of Merlot, which gives it a touch more roundness. The fleshy, generous 2006 Le Serre Nuove offers terrific balance in an enveloping, warm expression of this important vintage. I have little doubt that current vintages of Le Serre Nuove are actually better wines than the early vintages of Ornellaia, which highlights how much viticulture and oenology have developed here over the last 20+ years. The 2006 Le Serre Nuove is 50% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot. The estate employs shorter fermentation and maceration times lasting 10-15 days and gives the wine 15 months in French oak, 25% new.

Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022. This set of new 2006s from Tenuta dell’Ornellaia leaves me looking for words that can adequately capture the pure magic and sheer profoundness the property has achieved in this important, hallmark vintage. I will try with one word: Monumental. The Ornellaia team led by Oenologist Axel Heinz and Agronomist/General Manager Leonardo Raspini has done a fabulous job with these wines, which have never failed to literally send shivers down my spine on the multiple occasions I have tasted them. At this stage the 2007 Serre Nuove, Ornellaia and Masseto are shaping up to be ripe, relatively early-drinking wines without the stuffing or sheer vibrancy of the 2006s. Black cherry, blackcurrant and tomato stalk. The fruit bundles onto the tongue all at once, making the finish rather brief, though with a good peppery spice flavour. Grippy tannins belie its food-centric inclination and would reward a few more years of bottle age. (RH)
About the producer
Based in the foothills of Bolgheri, Ornellaia is one of the original Super Tuscans, making some of Italy’s finest Cabernet blends. Created by Lodovico Antinori, today the estate is owned by the Frescobaldi family, which also owns sibling property Masseto.
