‘Mild winter with quite heavy rainfall. Warm start to spring with some frost and cold spells. Good flowering. Hot and dry summer. Rain before harvest which began around 26 September. A few hailstorms punctuated dry and sunny weather during the vintage. Small crop due to summer drought. A perfect Pomerol vintage.’ Rich and heady and with more stuffing and bluster than the 1971. Just a little bit hard but it’s impressive. (JR)

The 1975 Vieux Château Certan comes from a good vintage in Pomerol; however, this certainly does not possess the clarity of charm of either the 1970 or 1971 that precede it. A little simple by comparison, it shows brambly red fruit and damp earth. The palate is well-balanced, fresh with light red fruit, but a bit dry, and I feel the finish lacks a bit of grip. Perhaps a little dilute as quantity was prioritized over quality in this era. Tasted at the VCC vertical at Etikhove.
The best Vieux-Chateau-Certan of the seventies, the 1975 has excellent power and richness as well as complexity and balance. Medium to dark ruby, with a fragrant, ripe, rich, plummy, cedary, spicy bouquet, full body, big, concentrated flavors, and moderate tannin, the wine is just beginning to reach its apogee. Anticipated maturity: Now-2000. Last tasted, 12/88.

About the producer
The original Château at Vieux Château Certan dates back to around 1770 but the modern history of the estate begins in 1924 - the year that Belgian wine merchant Georges Thienpont purchased the property.
