Tasted at the Clos des Chênes vertical in London, the 1989 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes is a little rustic on the nose compared to the 1990, much more savory with dried blood/ferrous aromas usurping what turned out to be a fleeting glimpse of its red berry fruit. The palate is soft in texture, the tannins fully melted here, leaving tertiary, clove and rosemary notes that are generous and yet simple compared with the superior 1990, 1991 and 1993. This is probably a couple of years past its best and yet you will still finish a well-stored bottle. Tasted November 2015.
