Score 90/100 · Drink 2022-2026, Angus Hughson, Vinous, Sep 2022

This 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon John Riddoch is showing its age but still offers plenty of interest. Overall, it’s an elegant package with sweet cassis, fruit pastille, leafy pine aromas with old cigars in the background. It retains good purity of slightly simple fruit flavours which are starting to fade. Herbal elements are rising, and coming to the fore, as is a backbone of sinewy tannins suggesting an early drinking window.

Full ruby-red. Deep aromas of currant, dark chocolate, meat, tar, peat and scotch. Concentrated, brambly berry flavors complicated by meat and truffle notes. Juicy, sweet and deep. Finishes fairly tannic, but the tannins are fine and there's plenty of lingering flavor.
