Fully mature, yet still showing solid mid-palate density and sweet fruit, the 2003 Les Cailloux Chateauneuf du Pape offers up a melange of sweet fig, kirsch, roasted herbs, and licorice aromas and flavors to go with a full-bodied, voluptuous, yet completely integrated and supple mouth feel. Fairly evolved, with some bricking at the edges, it, nevertheless, held up beautifully over the evening and gained richness and depth with air. Drinking at what I would call point, it should continue to evolve gracefully for a number of years to come.

This Les Cailloux Châteauneuf-du-Pape epitomizes the 2003 vintage and is stacked with huge, meaty and rich kirsch and black cherry fruit, melted licorice, liquefied stems and hot stone aromas on the nose. In the mouth, this is full bodied with incredibly rich fruit, a soft, mouth filling and weighty texture and beautiful length. 2003 haters will probably find something to dislike here but this is a serious, stunning Chateauneu.

Deep, bright red. Cherry, red plum, raspberry liqueur aromas, along with pungent notes of rose, violet and smoked meat. Conveys the great ripeness of the vintage but the tangy wild strawberry and rhubarb flavors are impressively fresh and delineated too. This expands impressively through the finish without losing focus or verve. While there are no tough tannins to get in the way of early drinking, this has the stuffing to repay cellaring. (JR)
