Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Damodes has a very fragrant, intoxicating nose thanks to its unbridled purity and delineation. Here is pure pinoté in all its unfettered glory. The palate is very well balanced, perhaps "classic" in style thanks to a touch of leafiness, although there is plenty of substance on the finish with the red fruit interlaced with Earl Grey tea and bay leaf. Lovely wine, just lovely - this surpasses the bottle I tasted a few months ago.

Good dark red. Aromas of black cherry and truffley underbrush. Densely packed but rather powerful, showing an almost liqueur-like ripeness to its flavors of red and darker fruits, minerals and licorice. Very bright and energetic but also noticeably oaky in the early going. Finishes with building, wood-influenced tannins and excellent length. In a somewhat tougher style than the more harmonious 2013 version, and in need of patience.
