A sleeper of the vintage from Ausone’s proprietor, Alain Vauthier, this beautifully made St.-Emilion is the poor person’s Ausone. The 2004 Fonbel’s deep ruby/purple color is followed by aromas of minerals, creme de cassis, blackberries, and licorice. Elegant, medium-bodied, and pure with loads of fruit, an enticing texture, and a long finish, it can be drunk over the next 7-8 years.

So dark purple it is almost blue. Very sharp, almost harsh nose which gave way to a creamy palate reminiscent of the violet cream in a chocolate assortment. A little bit overworked with lots of acidity but with well managed tannins. An Alain (Ausone) Vauthier wine. (JR)

Owned by the same family as Ch. Ausone, Ch. de Fonbel is one of the best-value Saint-Emilion estates. It has a long history stretching back to the Roman era, however its story really begins when Alain Vauthier purchased the property in 1971.
