The 2005 Reignac is in a gorgeous place now where it offers quite a bit of complexity yet also has the depth to drink well for another few years. Cedar, tobacco, mocha, sweet oak, spice and plush red berry fruit all run through the 2005. Rich and unctuous, with good balance, the 2005 has aged well. It's a flamboyant style to be sure, but all the elements are nicely balanced. This is a terrific effort from proprietors Yves and Stephanie Vatelot. A wine I bought on release, but is time to drink up.

From a large 200-acre vineyard, this blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon comes from a high plateau near the village of Saint-Loubès. A consistently over-achieving wine that is far superior to its humble appellation (Bordeaux Supérieur), the 2005 may be one of the all-time great Reignacs. Inky purple, almost black to the rim, the wine looks like a two-year-old rather than one that’s already hit a decade. Proprietors Yves and Stephanie Vatelot have turned out a superlative effort in this vintage that is cru classé quality. Dense crème de cassis, some graphite, spice box and cedar wood are all present in this full-bodied, super-concentrated, and remarkably impressive Reignac that has terrific purity, texture and length. Drink it over the next decade.
Another top-notch effort from the home property of the brilliant Yves Vatelot, Reignac’s 2005 has a dense ruby/purple color and notes of graphite, black currant, some sweet cherries, and spice box. It is a medium to full-bodied wine with beautiful concentration, decent acidity, and ripe tannin. Despite its humble appellation, this is a very serious wine that is qualitatively up there with some of the better classified growths of the Medoc. It should drink beautifully for 8-10 years. A sleeper of the vintage!
