2007 Barolo Monserra

The 2007 Barolo Monserra shows excellent focus and energy in a core of bright red fruit, flowers and mint. This is an energetic, somewhat nervous style, especially within the context of the year, but the wine shows excellent balance and harmony. The oak is a bit dominant at this stage. If it integrates, the Monserra might very well merit a higher score. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022. Jimy Raineri has become Domenico Clerico’s right-hand man over the last few years. I am sure learning from one of the masters of Barolo is an amazing opportunity, but it also creates an expectation that might be too much for a young winemaker, at least at the beginning. I have followed Raineri’s own Baroli since the debut vintage last year and, while the wines are still works in progress, Raineri is a talented producer well worth keeping an eye on for the future.
