Tasting notes
The provocative 2000 Aglianico del Vulture Il Viola is a wickedly wild, nearly savage Italian red that should be tried by adventurous readers. Aromas of damp earth, flowers, pepper, sweet red and black fruits, and some kinky characteristics I couldn't decipher are followed by a full-bodied, dense, distinctive wine. Its loads of flavor as well as original style merit attention. Drink it over the next 3-4 years. Importer: Vias Imports, New York, NY; tel. (212) 629-0200

Good dark red. Blackberry, blueberry and menthol aromas. Structured, intensely flavored and tightly wound, with blackberry and licorice flavors along with a suggestion of dried fruits. Firm but not rigid, with a tangy sugar/acid balance contributing to the impression of verve. Youthful finish features tooth-coating tannins. (A second sample of this wine was of roughly equal quality but came across as sweeter and more evolved.)
