Bottled by Bordeaux negociant Barrière. This was expected to trounce the 1956 Pape Clément but that was not the case, on the night of the dinner anyway. Still very dark, concentrated blackish ruby with a pale, orange shaded rim. At the dinner it seemed a little hard on the finish, a bit brutal and with a sweetness that I wondered may be owed to chaptalisation. But on the night after the dinner it blossomed and tasted like very mature, complex claret with sweetness and acidity in harmony – and of course no tannin left. (JR)

Brownish garnet with some red at core. Bloody nose. But fresh and still has some really nice red fruit showing through the undergrowth and slight meatiness. Silky, fresh and elegant. Great balance even in old age. Silky, vibrant and very impressive. At least from the samples I tasted, much better than the 1961. (JH)
