Tasting notes
Dark fruits are intermingled with brown sugar in the aromas of the 2002 Riesling Eiswein Eitelsbacher Karthauserhofberg #48. This spicy, well-focused, light to medium-bodied wine reveals loads of sweet black cherry fruit in its long, softly-textured character. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2030. (for 375 ml.) Elegant, buoyant, refined and not at all exaggerated, this is also admirable in its purity of citrus and red berry fruit. The finish here is a ravishing redcurrant and strawberry liqueur laced with bright citrus and brown spices. 2 stars.
(for 375 ml.) Representing the best portions of an Eiswein picking, this displays a nose that is eerie and foreboding in its smoky, quietly volatile and esterous way. In the mouth, this exudes apricot jam, redcurrant jelly and honey. Thick and dense on the palate, yet laced with efficacious raw lemon. This does not approach the refinement or elegance of the #48 but certainly displays a lot of energy. 1 star.
