The single vineyard wines, which are bottled under the name lieu-dit, include the outstanding 2010 Crozes-Ermitage Lieu-Dit Les Picheres. There are 440 cases of this classic Crozes-Hermitage. It offers lots of lavender, garrigue, black currant and beef blood-like characteristics in its dense ruby-colored, full-bodied personality. Delicious already, it should keep for another decade. The quality of Ferraton’s wines has been increasing with nearly every new vintage thanks to the efforts of Michel Chapoutier and his number one assistant, P.H. Morel, who has the responsibilities for these wines. I have included a few Southern Rhones that were not reviewed in Issue #203. Some of the 2011 white wines are in bottle, but the more serious cuvees are still in barrel. Glass-staining ruby. Black and blue fruits on the pungent, intensely perfumed nose. Ripe and weighty, with serious power to its cassis and boysenberry flavors. Supple tannins add shape to the finish and quickly fade into the hefty, clinging fruit. I suspect that this big boy, which is a bit monolithic at this stage, will be a good cellar candidate but it will also drink well soon after release.
Will be bottled in March 2012. Organic certified. Their second release. Solid but not inspiring. Nine months in cement. Bit stolid. (JR)
