Moderately saturated medium red. Perfumed aromas of cherry, strawberry, coffee, mocha and flowers. Rich, suave and concentrated; nicely horizontal on the palate, but with its flesh cut byt slightly spiky acidity. The broad finish features dusty tannins and lovely floral persistence. Seems a tad rustic today and in need of patience.

The 2007 Barolo Villero is unusually fleshy and textured in this vintage. An open, spiced bouquet leads to expressive sweet red fruit as the wine opens up in the glass. The Villero shows striking inner perfume and gorgeous depth from start to finish. Red cherries, flowers, mint and hard candy linger on the close. This is a radiant Villero full of promise.

Anticipated maturity: 2014-2027. This is a stellar showing from Mauro and Giuseppe Mascarello. The 2007 Baroli are stunning now that they are in bottle, but the Barberas are equally worthy of attention. As always, the style is very traditional, but in 2007 the steady warmth of the vintage has given the wines an extra dimension of fleshiness. The 2007 Monprivato in particular is shaping up to be another legendary Barolo from Mascarello. Importers: Doug Polaner, Polaner Selections, Mt. Kisco, NY; tel. The 2007 Barolo Villero looks to be an overachiever in this vintage. It shows an extra layer of textural richness that is sometimes elusive in this bottling, along with gorgeous, floral aromatics and an exotic personality I find highly appealing.
