The 2008 Jean Faure is a vintage that I have not previously tasted. Quite deep in color with modest aging on the rim, it presents an attractive blackberry and wild strawberry bouquet with traces of cassis. It’s clean, pure, well defined and more vigorous than the previous vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. This is a solid Saint-Émilion, though more monotone than I would like toward the finish, where I am seeking more complexity. The aromatics have more to offer than the palate. Drink over the next 4–5 years.

The 2008 Chateau Jean Faure is a unique, singular wine based largely on Merlot. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by lots of black (and some blue) fruits, leafy herbs, graphite, and bright minerality. This beauty is medium-bodied, silky and polished on the palate, with beautiful acidity woven into the wine, no hard edges and good mid-palate. It's a youthful, lively 2008 that's drinking great today.
Same owner as Mas Amiel in Roussillon. Not very expressive on the nose, dark, savoury and spiced on the palate. Finishes fine and dry and with marked spice. Focused and persistent if not charming. (JH)
