Tasting Notes
The colour shows an amber rim to a still vivid red middle. Beautifully elegant in a ripe strawberry style with a savoury edge. Then the red fruit starts to sing. The 2000 offers an impression of readiness without any sign of tiring. A sweeter edge to the fruit at the start, good acidity. Impressive persistence. This example demonstrates how the 2000 vintage, originally viewed as a year to drink up early, refuses to go to sleep. I suspect this would have developed further interest had we been able to return to it later.

This was my second encounter with Rousseau’s 2000 Chambertin in just a few weeks, although this time it was served completely blind. It reaffirms my previous note: mature in appearance, but a healthy, clear color. The nose is open-knit with that distinctive herbaceous bouquet, here a little more fungal than I previously noticed. The palate is harmonious, with crisp acidity, fine tannins, and hints of soy informing the rather angular finish. Not one of the domaine’s greatest Chambertins, but still enjoyable.
Good medium red. Cooler, more aristocratic nose than the Clos de Beze: blackberry, violet, minerals. Supple and suave but quite pure and sharply focused, with a degree of precision rare for the vintage. Finishes with terrific grip. Like the Clos Saint-Jacques and Clos de Beze, this may well ultimately merit a higher score.
I was awe struck by the simply phenomenal complexity displayed by this wine. It is as if each wine in this range kept adding yet one more nuance and the '00 is in the league of the unbelievable '96 at the same stage of its development. This is more linear than the Clos de Bèze with frank, direct, robust flavors that stop just short of being raw. The length here is mind bending and while this will not compete for the longest lived Rousseau Chambertin, it is packed, powerful yet for all the power, there is all this incredible complexity. One can get lost in wines like this.
